Letter to the editor commenting on family views

Dear Sir or Madam,

I have read Henry Reid – Streebling’s letter commenting on family views and would like now to share my views with other readers. I am a teenager myself and on the ground of that I can speak my mind freely on that topic.
Firstly, family values were mentioned as to have changed for worse over those 40 years. As far as I am concerned, they cannot change, they will always remain the same. What can change eventually is how today’s society view them.

It is true that most of us spend time lazing around and get down to work when exams relentlessly approach. But teenagers have (and have always had) different attitudes, just like adults do. Sometimes it is also the case of brought-up. If parents doesn’t take much care of their children and do not supervise them while doing homework, they simply ignore their school duties.

Moreover, most of parents give the best conditions to learn to their children so that we do not have to work. We also get some pocket money for our own needs. But, with respect, times have changed a lot. We face now a high percent of unemployment, which have caused that many of our parents lost their jobs. Firstly, even though we sometimes really would like to work, we simply cannot. Secondly, due to government’s reforms which introduced many new subjects to our schedule, there is simply no such possibility for us to work after school as we stay at school till 4 PM!

Additionally, I do not consider my parents as “servants”. In my house there is a fair share of duties and no one views anybody to be a servant, especially my parents.

All in all, author’s childhood differs from that of today’s teenagers but it is not necessarily worse or more difficult. We also have to work hard to achieve high results at school in order to get a well-paid job in the future, what, in today’s competitive world is very difficult and requires a lot of effort. We respect our parents as well, as they were the one to have given life to us.
