Dear Sir or Madame

I am writing in reference to your article commenting on teaching foreign languages in secondary schools published in one of your latest issues. As a student of this kind of school I consider myself as a fair representative of my fellow students, who support my view on the issue.

I agree that we do have a lot of homework and it's sometimes difficult for us to find free time to spend on leisure activities but it's also a fact that most of teenagers just waste their time sitting glued to the TV screen instead of doing something from which they could gain profits in the future or just socialise with friends. I myself learn two foreign languages in my school and I find it very enjoyable, in comparison to subjects like physics, and useful even in everyday life. Although it may be true that some children have no contact with their foreign fellows, I have many friends that do stay in touch with their friends from abroad. You mentioned that some of children won't travel to other countries, but what with these that will? Nowadays you can choose between school with higher standards in which pupils learn more things than average and the ones providing pupils with only the basic knowledge. As far as the future is concerned I think that a good command of many languages will greatly facilitate obtaining a well-paid post. Moreover, as the standard demands for any work are increasing in the nearest future it will be most probably impossible to get a job without being familiar with at least two foreign languages.

To sum up, having taken into account the additional homework, I strongly believe that most of pupils find learning foreign languages interesting and it surely will be profitable in their future. I am looking forward to seeing my letter published in one of the next issues of your newspaper.

Yours faithfully
