- oprócz stopniowania rosnącego stosujemy również stopniowanie opadające o następującej konstrukcji:
less + przymiotnik w stopniu podstawowym + than
- This sofa is less expensive than that one. (Ta sofa jest tańsza niż tamta.)
- Jane is less fit than her friends. (Jane jest mniej wysportowana niż jej koleżanki.)

Zauważ, że nie każdy przykład stopniowania opadającego w języku angielskim możemy przetłumaczyć na język polski, używając tej samej konstrukcji. Czasami lepiej skorzystać z przymiotnika o przeciwnym znaczeniu.
