One of the very few obligatory books that I enjoyed reading was Tartuffe. It's a comic play written by Moliere in 1664. It's considered to be one of his most famous and controversial works.
The action takes place in Orgons house and the plot revolves around Tartuffe, a man taken in by him. Tartuffe manages to convince Orgon and his mother of his bigotry and religious enlightenment that blinds them to the point where they love him more than own family, which ensues in domestic conflicts. Orgons relatives clearly see trough Tartuffes trickstery and know that he acts accordingly to his convenience. They try to makee Orgon see the fraud before it's too late.
One of the best-developed characters and my personal favourite is Dorine, the maid of Orgons daughter. She's outspoken, sharp-witted and straightforward. Despite her low status in the household, she's the wisest and thanks to her brilliant scheming, the family members muster themselves in an attempt to expose Tartuffes hipocrisy. Another interesting character is Orgon, who is comically clueless, oblivious and stubborn.
I think this play's humor is timeless and entertains to this day. Some of the characters are ridiculous just by themsleves, but Tartuffes constant behavior changes and Dorines plotting lead to ludicrous situations and conversations. The book, though full of different personages and intricacies, is easy and quick to read.
This book is a pleasant read that quickly draws you in. I would recommend it to anyone who isn't easily bored by obsolete language.
