A drama „Wesele” is written by Stanislaw Wyspianski. I read it about a month ago because it was necessary for my Polish lessons. The drama is very often shown in theatres.
The story is set in a village Bronowice near Cracow. The plot centres on a wedding of a man who represents intelligentsia and a woman who is a peasant. The book opens with a conversation between Czepiec who is a peasant and a journalist. The second character tries to realize his partner of discussion that he shouldn’t be interested in politics because he isn’t aware enough. All the plot shows that peasants and intelligentsia couldn’t cooperate in the past. It was caused by historical events.
The thing I really like in the book is one of the conversations: between Marysia and a ghost, who was her ex-boyfriend. Moreover the drama skillfully conveys a sense of all creation.
Unfortunately, the majority of discussions between characters is really pathetic. What’s more, without a sound historical knowledge it’s hard to understand what is going on in it. The amount of characters is too big. In the end of the drama a reader doesn’t know what they are talking about and who is who.
All in all, if you’re a fan of complicated books, you’ll enjoy it. And if you’re not, you’d better give it up. The meaning of the creation is very interesting, but the plot- rather confusing. It’s not worth reading.
