Jeffrey Archer was born on 15th of April in 1940 in city Mark. He was educated in Oxford at Wellington School and Brasenose Collage with well effects. He was keen on sport and represented Great Britain as a world-class sprinter. But he chose different kind of career – political one. He was elected a major of House of Commons and from this moment his life was changed. Jeffrey Archer began writing thrillers to help overcome his financial problems and it appears good idea because he was a widely read author. In 1985 he was appointed deputy chairman of the Conservative Party and in 1992 joined the House of Lords and continue what he really likes. He lives in Cambridge with his wife and two sons now.
His political thrillers have become international bestsellers with millions of copies sold. “Not a penny more, not a penny less” – it was his first book published in 1976. His positions are really worth of reading and I suppose that I will read few others Jeffrey Archer’s novels soon because I am fascinated by his style of writing.

I have chosen a multi-themed book for my presentation and must admit I could not put it down, because it was so gorgeous. It was a clear story but sometimes confusing.
“Sons of fortune” is one of the best Jeffrey Archer’s books. It is divided into seven parts and they are connected with each other very well. The novel has about 500 pages and there is
a motive of the USA at the cover. The story concerns two brothers who are separated by fate. The author describes their lives from childhood to adolescence. Readers are enthralled from the first page till the last one because of theme of mystery, drama and comedy. The twins were born at the same hospital in Connecticut with a son of a millionaire couple. He died
but their private nurse exchanged children.
Nathaniel lived with his biological parents – Sue and Michael Cartwright who represent middle-class. He was a son of a history teacher and an insurance salesman. However Fletcher grew up with Ruth and Robert Davenport who have their own business.
Parents chose different life ways for boys. Therefore they grew up unaware of existence of each other. Nathaniel got a scholarship and started school at Taft’s but Fletcher’s parents had enough money to pay for Hotkiss. Then Nat decided for enlist and he went to Vietnam, where he got a Medal of Honor for his patriotic and moral behavior. When he came back home he was a respected man at the Connecticut University and then became a banker. Though Fletcher graduated from Yale and started his career as a criminal lawyer and well known senator. Brothers led another technique of life but only to some extent. Both of them were handsome and intelligent and Archer shows it in a funny way when they fell in love with the same girl – Diana Coulter. I can say that they lived in “two worlds” as far as their paths crossed one day. It was thanks to their wives Sue Ling who was Korean and Annie who brought them to life son and daughter – Lucy and Luke. They loved them the most.
One of the strong parts of Jeffrey Archer is his style of telling a story which keeps you tied to the plot during reading this book. I became convinced on my own.
Brothers had ups and downs which were depicted in a very interesting way but sometimes there is too much politics what makes this story dull. These moments were usually interlace with abroad travels which was incredible.
Nat and Fletcher even had the same enemy – Ralph Elliot who was killed and Nat was charged with murder after lost of his son. Luke commit suicide when he got to know true about his grandmother in South Korea during some Nat’s political debate. Nat and Fletcher were candidates for the position of the governor of Connecticut, so they were rivals and Fletcher firstly did not want to be his defender. However he changed his mind after his wife’s requests. They became friends when true about Elliot and Rebecca – his wife was publicized and Nat was free thanks to Fletcher. He had a chance to repay him when he had a potentially fatal car accident and he had a heavy lost of blood.
I do not want describe more details and spoil the pleasure of reading. I try to depict only few events from many, many others in the whole book and I propose you to find out
- who wins elections?
- who becomes the governor?
- do they come to know that they are twins?
I would like to recommend “Sons of fortune” because it is an absolutely amazing story but I reckon it would not be enjoyed by everybody because everyone has a different taste.
