There were three patients in the waiting room that evening. One was Mrs. Mancini, who suffered from insomnia, and who came in every Thursday to get her week’s supply of sleeping pills. Next to her was young Mickey Wilson, who I had treated for a knife wound six months before. This time he had a nasty cut on the eye, which he kept wiping with a handkerchief. And then there was my old friend Joseph, whose wife had died two years before and who had left him with three children to bring up single-handed. He had a job, which bought in a reasonable amount of money, but it wasn’t enough to pay all his bills. His landlord was threatening to evict him from flat, where he’d been living since he had got married.
