Lately I was in a mood for some traditional polish cuisine, so I opened the phone book on the pleat of restaurants and searched or the one that would make my palate gloat upon delicious food. My choice was a restaurant with funny, but inviting name ‘U Babuni’. As it turned out, the location of the restaurant was perfect. I am pretty sure that everyone is able to find it. ‘U Babuni’ is situated just in font of the Royal Castle in the Old Town. Having come inside the very first thing I noticed was a gentle smell of birch wood that was coming from the centre of the dining hall, where small hearth was lighted. What is more, other advantages of this restaurant are the opening hours: from Monday till Sunday, from 1 to 11 p.m.
As soon as I sat, I was given a menu card and, to my total astonishment, fascine, lard and some fresh, smelling bread has been served. As I opened the menu I was really surprised. Variety of food and prices were good, however, as it came in later, was not equitable to the size of the meal. Items in the menu card, such as ‘Kaszanka royal style’ (18 zł), ‘Gold fish’ (24 zł) or a dish for vegetarians called ‘Green salad’ (15 zł) would satisfy even the biggest and strongest malcontents. The most famous dish ‘U Babuni’ serves is ‘Wild piggy’, tasty and filling venison from Bialowieza’s bison. For 30 zł you can try mouth-watering and tender meat, potatoes with cracklings and ‘Vegetable salad’.
After dinner, if you are not full yet, you can choose between toothsome cakes like ‘Grandma’s apple pie’ or ‘Brownie’. For those who like to taste some traditional polish drink, there is an enormous assortment of beer, vodka and polish delicacy – mead.
Although I found the food delicious, there was one aspect that made me a bit angry. The waiters were really clumsy and behaved like a bull in a china shop, once even I had a tea poured out on me, instead of onto the pot.
Reassuming, my dinner was satisfying and the price I had paid was reasonable. I would eagerly recommend this restaurant to all those who want to have a fling at traditional cuisine and feel the special polish atmosphere. On the other side, ones who like having good service quality would be utterly disgusted with ‘U Babuni’.
