Many disputes over constitutional issues have been brought before U.S. Supreme Court. The Supreme Court’s decisions like those in Plessy v. Ferguson, Roe v. Wade or Miranda v. Arizona made a huge impact on U.S. history.
Plessy v. Ferguson from 1896 was about civil rights. A Louisiana law from before 1896 required separate seating for white passengers and black passengers on public railroads. Plessy argued that the policy violated his right to “equal protection of the law” under the Constitution of United States. The Supreme Court ruled that separation of races is legal in public places. This issue made a huge impact on American history, because it led to Brown v. Board of Education case from 1954. This led to 14th Amendment to the Constitution, stating that there is no separate equality, and segregation in schools is illegal.

Roe v. Wade from 1987 was about the right to privacy. Roe argued that Texas law prohibiting her from having an abortion violated her right to privacy provided by U.S. Constitution. The Supreme Court ruled that Roe should not be forbidden to terminate her pregnancy. This issue made a great impact on U.S. history because it is very controversial. It led to Webster v Reproduction Health Services in 1989. It’s ruling was that public funds can’t be used for abortion in the state of Missouri.

Miranda v. Arizona case from 1966 was about the due process. Miranda, a convicted kidnapper, signed a confession including a statement that he had “full knowledge” of his legal rights. He later argued before the Supreme Court that his confession was illegally obtained. The Supreme Court agreed, because this right was provided by the Constitution. This case also had a huge impact on U.S. history. This ruling granted U.S. citizens the right to remain silent, which is included in “Miranda rights”- the rights that have to be read to a suspect before his/her arrest. It also granted the right to a lawyer in case you cannot afford one.

One conclusion can be drawn from this discussion: many disputes over constitutional issues have been brought before the Supreme Court and their ruling made a great impact on the history of United States. It doesn’t matter if it is about civil rights like in Plessy v. Ferguson, the right to privacy like in Roe v Wade, or the due process like in Miranda v. Arizona. If there is a constitutional issue involved, the Court will rule according to the majority of people. But times change, people change, and new amendments are made.
