The authorities all over the world have been successful in reducing smoking and drinking rates by enacting higher excise taxes. Recently another health issue has appeared: obesity. Many celebrities have embarked on various campaigns the aim of which was to enhance people’s awareness of the implications of the disorder. Lately even some governments have begun to take notice of fatness and consider introducing financial incentives for the overweight to lose weight. The adamant opponents of the idea maintain that it depends on us, free people, whether we want to keep fit or be overweight. They would also have us believe that it is the internal motivation that is the most effective and no amount of money can truly prompt weight loss. These arguments, however, fail to take into account several crucial facts, for example that obesity is can adversely affect one’s health and also that it is a medical condition people feel despondent with. Therefore, the overweight should be offered financial incentives to lose weight, as it would constitute a good motivation to start slimming, prevent the obese from many serious diseases and avoid rampant obesity which is not a good template for others.
The first argument revolves around the reasons for obese people to go on a diet. The adamant opponents of the idea of providing the overweight with financial incentives to lose weight maintain that the rationale should come from within and, as long as the concerned do not want to be healthy, no sum of money can keep them slim forever. This line of reasoning is not entirely erroneous, since it is true that without the internal motivation it is not so easy to lose weight. However, proponents fail to acknowledge that many of those who are willing to slim, indisputably need some extra push to help them on their way. Therefore, they should be offered financial incentives to lose weight, as it would constitute a good reason to start taking care of oneself. This is of great importance as unfortunately many people neglect their health or are simply too indolent to take up any activity that could improve their condition. Such a step would undeniably enhance fat people’s determination to lose weight.
Apart from considering the rationale behind going on diet one should also focus on the health implications that may be brought about by being overweight. Another argument brought to the fore by the adamant opponents of the idea of the suggested incentive to lose weight is that because we are free people, we cannot be denied the chance to make a choice between a slim and stout figure. There are, however, serious flaws in this reckoning, as it fails to acknowledge the dangerous repercussions of being fat. Because obesity is a medical condition whose consequences may range from minor ailments to severe disorders, it should be of paramount importance to preach dieting among overweight people. Obesity is associated particularly with cardiovascular diseases, diabetes or even cancer. It is also detrimental to the articuli and may even reduce life expectancy, which is why these days pushing the obese into slimming should be an imperative.
In addition to the question of the rationale behind opting for diet and health implications of obesity, it is reasonable to take into account the image that obese people create. Those against the idea of providing fat people with a financial motive to slim persistently assure us that despite many merits in leading a healthy lifestyle, not everyone has time and money to keep fit as it usually necessitates taking up some expensive sport. Such a viewpoint is based on ignorance and presents only weak excuses on the part of those who deny the possibility of healthy lifestyle. The overweight should be offered financial incentives to lose weight, as they do not serve as good templates and promote an unhealthy lifestyle. By eating junk food they advertise fast food restaurants and their weight shows they do not pay attention to their well-being which is a bad example for those who are vulnerable to the excessive weight gain. Consequently, it is crucial to show people that the fight against obesity is essential.
We have discussed the arguments for offering financial incentive to lose weight. Those who are against the idea would have us believe that as we are free people, we have the opportunity to make a choice whether we want to keep fit or not to pay too much attention to our weigh. Such an argument may contain a grain of truth, but it fails to take into account the implications of being obese such as cardiovascular diseases and joint problems which are at hand if one is obese. Therefore, people with weight problems should be offered some spur to lose weight and the financial incentive is what can really work miracles. Moreover, excessive weight is associated with various diseases of different kind. Apart from this, such people do not serve as good templates and promote unhealthy lifestyle. As these are the governments that should help shape society, they have already enacted laws to foster healthy lifestyle; they banned drinking and driving or smoking in public places. Today obesity is a related problem and so now the time has come to conquer it not only due to the financial reasons but also for the sake of people’s well-being.
