A Review of the play ‘Oliver Twist’

'Oliver Twist' is a book written by Charles Dickens, who was a popular English writer. He also wrote many other famous novels, such as: 'The Pickwick Papers"', 'Little Dornit' and 'A Christmas Carol'. The novel has had two film adaptations, and has also been turned into many theatre plays. One of these plays is performed by TNT Theatre Britain.

There are 5 main characters: Oliver, Fagin, Bill, Nancy and the Artful Dodger. Despite the fact the most of the plays based on Dickens’s book is dramatic and sad, the one performed by TNT is funny and surprising. It is showed threw the eyes of Fagin. The play begins with a scene in which Oliver’s mother gives birth to her son and dies melodramatically. The action is fast and funny. However, not everyone will enjoy presenting Oliver Twist as a comedy.

The actors are mostly woman, playing man. Even though there are not many performers and some of them play more than one character, they have done a really good job. The dialogues are not realistic, but they’re supposed to be like this, because it’s a comedy.
‘Oliver Twist’ is a low-budget spectacle. The stage design is really poor, there are only a few objects on the stage. The door is the coffin put on its end, what seems quite funny. In addition, the costumes are unrealistic.

To sum up, on the one hand, the actors made a good performance in spite of the low budget. This play is way different from other spectacles about Oliver Twist. It’s fast, funny and unpredictable. On the other hand, the stage design is very disappointing. In addition, presenting this story as a comedy may be controversial.
