Reflective Log
First day at the College was very stressful. Firstly because I did not know how to move on the college area, secondly because it is always difficult to start something new especially when you do not have a clue what can you expect from this and finally because I thought my language was not as good as should be to finish Management course.
On the first lesson students have meet academic teachers who explained general rules about Management and how to keep rules on their classes off course. Tutor Mike who is a dean at the College asked us to give him all our details e.g. contact number, e-mail address etc. Then he split our big group onto smaller groups – Monday and Thursday group, because there was too many students and too big crowd in the class. I chose Monday because it is not colliding with my work.
As my first assignment John gave me 10 minutes presentation in Power Point about some guy who was an Australian psychologist, sociologist and organization theorist. He is known as the founder of the Human Relations Movement, and is known for his research including the Hawthorne Studies, and his book The Human Problems of an Industrialized Civilization (1933). After I have passed this task I was very happy because it was my first serious assignment and my knowledge about Motivational Theories was much better than on the beginning.
When I started studying at College I had little or no knowledge of Managing Self and Others. But after a few months I understand the basics of this topic. I started to understand the human nature because to understand and motivate people you must know human nature which is the common qualities of all human begins. In my Managing Self and Others lessons we have studied about famous theorist and well-known psychologists, leadership and motivational behavior, models of group development and a lot of other useful topics. The biggest knowledge I acquired was about:
- Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
- Herzberg’s Hygiene and Motivational Factors
- Douglas McGregor’s Theory X and Theory Y
- Vroom’s Expectancy Theory
- David’s McClelland Three Types of Motivational Needs
- Taylor’s Scientific Management Theory
- Elton Mayo’s Hawthorne Experiments
- The Tuckman Model of Group Development (Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing, Adjourning)
Managing Self and Others gives me more knowledge about SWOT. SWOT Analysis is a powerful technique for identifying Strengths and Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. Used in a personal context, it helps me develop my career in a way that takes best advantage of my talents, abilities and opportunities. What makes SWOT particularly powerful is that with a little thought, it can help me undercover opportunities that I am well placed to take advantage of. And by understanding my weaknesses, I can manage and eliminate threats that would otherwise catch my unawares. Therefore as my first assignment regarding SWOT presentation John allot me Confidence in Grammar. This presentation is an individual power point presentation on mastering a New Skill based upon a strength and weakness analysis. I was not sure of my knowledge about power point while it was first time I was using this program. The stress and nerves was surrounded me before my presentation but because I know how to control this, I have passed with good result and since then I do not have to worry about the next presentation.
Managing Self and Others taught me and will teach me:
- How to write an Essay or Report
- Time management skills
- Managing personal learning by understanding and identifying personal learning styles and preferences
- How to overcome barriers to learning
- Teambuilding
- Identifying strategies and
- How to write the presentation in power point
- different levels of management other than the person I see as my ‘boss’
- To increase my knowledge of English work practices and levels of Management
- Managing conflict of interests, objectives and perceptions
- The power of groups
- Identifying the significance of personality in relation to personal development
- Managing a team or a group.
