In the past Polish weddings were composed of two parts. One took place in the Registry Office and the second in the bride’s church. Nowadays more popular are the concordat weddings which join both former into one ceremony held in any church. Weddings in Poland are more traditional than the western ones however, almost the same superstitious. For example the best month to get married is that which contains an “R” in its name. Luckily people tie the knot almost every week…

It is not easy to prepare a wedding and the time flies incredibly fast. Almost a year before the ceremony the exact date must be chosen and booked. Being in the middle of those preparations can give you headache… And still so many things left! A list of guests should be prepared, invitations sent, wedding rings bought, place for the reception reserved and decorated… Isn’t it too much even for two people? Not to metion buying the wedding clothes and accessories, finding a photographer and music band or collecting the necessary documents. A long to-do list… In addition in all this spate of duties the young people are obliged to attend the pre-marital course. The maze of arrangements seems to have no end but finally this day comes…

The couple arrives somehow (by car or hackney) to the Registry Court or straight to the church. Often a “Wedding March” accompanies their entry. During a long mass with sparkling eyes they exchange the vows and are announced “a husband and wife” what is witnessed by a bestman and a maid of honour. Leaving the church the newly-wed are thrown with rice or small change which assures happiness. After greetings, looking forward to a great party, all the people go for a reception. Everyone is feasting until the just married go to celebrate their wedding night and then honeymoon.

Polish weddings are very touching events. I have been only to several ones but it is enough to feel the aura of felicity, unity and love. Thanks to combining western trends and local traditions the wedding ceremony and later reception create a stunning, unique experience.
