Famous singers and artists create popular songs concerning typical problems such as: disasters, human conflicts or wars. Many years ago, Bob Dylan protested against war in Vietnam. Nowadays, entertainers often create numbers about conflicts like War in Iraq and other catastrophes all over the world. One of them is Katie Melua. This twenty-two years old canary has sung since 2003. Her last four years were especially productive. Melua has released two albums: Call Off the Search and Piece by Piece. This singer’s recent album include a lot of timeless records. One of them is Spider’s Web. Katie Melua has written the lyrics to this song without help of a songwriter.
War in Iraq is a very controversial topic. The society is divided between followers and opponents of this conflict. The number of those opponents is constantly increasing. A lot of people are against war and sending soldiers to war zone. In Spider’s Web Katie Melua affirms us that constant fight with terrorism has no sense at all. Unfortunately it happens that casualties are not only among the army, but also among blameless civilians who live on these area. Nobody knows what other countries should do, when one of them is dangerous and unfriendly for the neighbours. The government in democratic countries usually takes decisions concerning topics that are important for the country. Officially, army forces fight for peace and fatherland defence, but it is not always true. People from all over the world die because of orders from an irresponsible and selfish governing person. That person can change the human life for worse. In my very humble opinion nobody can be absolutely sure about the former person decisions. Katie Melua hopes that these orders are justifiable and good for the society. When we read the words from her song like: How do I know which is right and I hope he does when he sends you to fight, we can suggest, that one person’s decision may surely contribute to death of many soldiers and civilians. We, as a society, cannot do much in order to change the situation like that, but we can surely express our point of view, concerning the government and their deeds. In my opinion, government ought to take society’s opinion into account. Cadence of the government depends on us, so all politicians’ decisions should conform with ours.
Moreover, in Spider’s Web Katie Melua notices the problem of racism: If a black man is racist, is it okay if it's the white man's racism that made him that way. Slavery was prohibited in 1815, so nowadays everybody should be equal of opportunity. Unfortunately, some of us are intolerant and impolite to other races. ‘Black’ or ‘white’ racists are the cause of many conflicts. Katie compares racism to piano keys: The piano keys are black and white. The division like that probably arise from different colours of human’s skin. But on the contrary, the words like: But they sound like a million colours in your mind may express a rainbow of all hues.
In my opinion, the song like Spider’s Web, is very useful and illuminating in today’s world – full of aggression and violence. Katie Melua as well as similar artists show us the problems of today’s world but they also suggest the ways of dealing with them. We should have hope for the better.
