"The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King"

The War over the Ring is on.

Write by: Beata Antosiak

"The Lord of the Rings" is one of the most popular book in the world. It was read by over 100 000 000 people. A lot of them love that book. Readers had big influence on final shape of the film. Peter Jackson changed his mind among other things about the battle in Helm's Deep, where Arwen was to fight, but she did't.

"The Return of the King" is the last part of "The Lord of the Rings". In the film action starts when Gollum leading Frodo and Sam to Sheloba’s cave. In this time their friends staying with king Theoden in Rohan. They are making Gondor help king Denethor in the battle. Frodo and Sam are going to Mordor to destroy the Ring.

The actors act very well, but I think Elijah Wood creates Frodo, who is phisically and psychically weak. In the Jackson’s film Frodo is different from a book. In the book he is strong and he tries to fight against Sauron. In first chapters he is a bit reckless and he thinks about his journey like about something funny. But he changes himself – in next chapters he starts to understand it is very important and difficult mission. In the film we cannot see Frodo’s transformaton. Elijah Wood is a great actor and his vision of Frodo is treasure, but my Frodo is a bit different.
In "The Fellowship of the Ring" all members of fellowship are important, but in the next part the most important characters are Aragorn and Frodo. In "The Return of the King" Aragorn is the most important person. I think it is not good, because the book tells about Frodo and other hobbits.

One of the figure, I remember best is Gandalf. He is a person, who has an influence on consequence of the War over the Ring.
The act in "The Return of the King" is great, but I think Aragorn should not be the main character.

The music was composed by Howard Shore. It is good, but spectators can think, that they know it, because it is similar to the previous parts. However, both music and atmosphere in the film are great. When you close your eyes and listen it, you can imagine pictures from "The Return of the King". It is really good, but I think it should be something new, what is not tied up with the music from "The Fellowship of the Ring" and "Two Towers".

"The Return of the King" is longer than the previous parts. Somebody who does not know Tolkien's books, can be bored, but if you like it, you should be satisfied. I think the last part is the best, because the plot is very similar to the contents. I think it is good. Tolkien has written the perfect book and nobody should correct it. In "The Two Towers" the plot with Faramir is changed and it is not good. Tolkien wrote that Faramir was not under the influence on the Ring, he had a reason. But in the last part we cannot to see "The cleaning in Shire". I think that chapter is important and I do not understand why Peter Jackson did not put it in the screenplay. In this chapter Saruman dies. In "The Return of the King" Christopher Lee does not appear. Every scenes which he takes part are cut. In my opinion it is not okay.

Stage designer did splendid job. Everything is beautiful and made with details. Minas Tirith is very realistic. The walls of it are white and it is built on the seven levels. Sheloba's cave is fantastic. The stage setting is very similar to description in the book. Grant Major made great stage setting, which harmonics with the film and music very well.

In the film special effects are fantastic, but destroing of the Ring is not good. It looks artificially and I do not know why it is made so badly. But the battle is really amazing. It looks fantastic, when orks are destroing the walls of Minas Tirith. Great effect is when the Wild Man disembark from a boat. It looks nice, when they fight against orks. Gollum is a computer character. He is made perfectly. His motions look realistically. Sheloba and Nazguls are made good, too. It was hard for actors to act in the scenes, where the characters were placed by computer, but they were good.

Photography are great. They are taken with expression, but sometimes, in the battles, spectators can not see what is happening, because the camera moves too fast.
The film is a big spectacl of special effects and the story seems to be not so important, but observant spectatores notice the plot of the friendship of Frodo and Sam and change of Aragorn. Scene which I like best is, when Sam helps Frodo to carry the Ring. He says beautiful words that he can not take over Frodo's burden, but he can carry Frodo with it. I think it is very touching. I hoped that Peter Jackson changed the end of the film, but he did not. But I think it is very good. When Frodo says "I saved Shire, but did not for me" people cry, because he is so unhappy.
I recommend "The Return of the King" to people, who like this book or previous parts of the film. Somebody, who really loves it, may be disappointed, because the film is different from the book. One should treat the book and film distincly.
