I?m going to talk about Gaius Julius Caesar, a Roman commander and leader. He was born in 100 BC. His father worked for Gaius Marius ? consul but died early. His mother ? Aurelia ? was sister of Gaius Marius. She brought Caesar up alone ? she was for him more like father than mother. His family was quite poor ? they lived in Subura -one of worse districts in Rome, just why he spent a lot of time with ordinary people. On the other hand, he belonged to old and traditional family, so he could make a career as a senator.
At first, Julius Caesar conquered Gaul, Britain and some smaller regions. He also won a few civil wars ? the most essential one ? with Pompey when he crossed the Rubicon saying alea iacta est what means the die is thrown. After that he became a dictator. He was extraordinary commander ? fought a few perfectly analyzed and prepared battles. He prefered fighting on land to at sea, however he usually won. I mean, he never sustained a real defeat.
Secondly, he was unusual politician. He never leaved any difficult tasks to his supporters and always was interested in everything by himself. His decisions were usually cunning, creative and unpredictable. Caesar beat opposition in the Senate what made him assured of lifelong dictatorship.
Furthermore, Julius Caesar was a competent lawyer ? created a lot of laws which improved Roman administration.
He could make accurate speeches and rhetoric was really important then, so Roman people loved him because of it although he was also very merciful for them.
Finally, the women loved Caesar, too. He was tall, well-built and handsome. He had got clear-light blue eyes and fair hair. He had a lot of love affairs ? especially the one with pharaoh of Egypt ? Cleopatra VII is well-known. They had got a son together ? Ptolemy XV Caesarion.
To sum up, Julius Caesar was succeed in every part of his life. He had got opened mind, full of ideas and wishes. He was a versatile and unlimited man, but he was murdered in 44 BC on the Ides of March by 22 plotters jealous of him. They thought that if they killed Caesar the Roman Republic would come back. But he made them a surprise ? leaved them his adoptive son ? Octavian, who took control in Rome becoming first emperor and killed all murderers of Ceasar or caused their deaths.
