EQUILBRIUM

?Equilibrium? is a sci-fi movie directed by Kurt Wimmer. This low budget production had it?s cinema premiere in year 2003. The main character ? cleric John Preston is played by Christian Bale, actor well known form movies like ?American Psycho? or ?Tears of the sun?. The rest of the cast includes Emily Watson as Mary O?Brian, Taye Diggs as cleric Brandt, Sean Bean, Angus MacFadyen and William Fitcher.

The story of ?Equilibrium? is set in the future, after the third World War, when only one country has survived- Libria. To prevent next wars, Librians are forced by the government to take medicine called Prozium that eliminates all human emotions. People who refuse to do it are guilty the sense-crime and the judgment is only one: extermination. Catching such people is the task of clerics- one of them is John Preston. He is very devoted to the system, however after meeting and arresting beautiful Mary O?Brian, he realizes he is doing wrong. John secretly stops taking Prozium and joins the underground resistance as a secret agent in enemy?s rows.

The biggest advantage of this movie is its interesting plot with high-speed action and great fighting scenes. Acting and special effects stand on a high level too. What impressed me most was that without large sum of money, Kurt Wimmer?s succeed to create a very realistic, but dark vision of our future.

?Equilibrium? is well worth seeing, even for people who do not like science fiction. Unlike many other movies from its kind, it has a message: it is our emotion that makes us human creatures and without them, like Mary O?Brian says: ?every breath is just a clock, ticking?. Do not expect another ?Matrix-like-movie?- ?Equilibrium? is much better!
