Halloween

This holiday has accually its origins in Celt religion. One of the stories says, that over 2 000 yerars ago, the Celts celebrated a holiday called Samhain. Samhain was the name of the God of Death.On the last day of October the God Samhain allowed the souls to visit the homes they once lived in.
On that night Celts left their homes and gathered together in a field. There they built a huge fire to scare away all the evil spirits, ghosts and other demons.
The holiday of Samhain was an ancresor of the halloween of today. Although it was not called halloween at first. When the Romans conqered the Celts in the fist century they added two parts of theri own festivals. By the time the Celt religion was replaced by Christianity. Somewhere around 800 year the Christian church declared November the 1st as All Saints' Day to honour all the Saints. The evening before, October the 31st became known as All Hallow Eve. Over the time the name has been shortened to Halloween.
Nowadays children dress up witches and ghosts costumesand visit neighbours t5o threaten them with "trick or treat". People carry Jack-o-Lantern made of pumpkins, organize parties and tell ghosts stories.
