Industrial rock is a musical genre which is a fusion of industrial and rock music. It arose in the eighties of the twentieth century. Typical instrumentation for industrial rock bands centers on heavily-distorted or otherwise-effected guitars and synthesizers. Bass guitars and drums may be played live, or may be replaced by sequencers and drum machines. One of the industrial bands is Rammstein. This German group was formed in 1994. The name ‘Ramstein’ probably originates from the air base that was situated in one of the towns in Germany. We can also translate this as ‘Rolling Stones’ – the answer at British rock’ n roll band from the sixties.
The idea of coming into being of Rammstein bred in Richard Kruspe’s brain. He, as a lead-guitarist, joined to this project drummer and bass-guitarist -Christoph Schneider and Oliver Riedel. Actually, the band is composed of six members. The leading role plays Till Lindemann – single vocalist and author of lyrics. From 1995 composition did not change.
The beginnings of Rammstein were surprising facilitate. Their first album Herzeleid brew up when majority of members had problems with the female sex. The title can be translated as ‘heartache’. The main track Du reichst so gut promoted the album of a band. It became one of the first top 10 songs in Germany and Austria. David Lynch contributed to spectacular success of the group. He used two pieces: Heirate Mich and Rammstein in his film entitled Lost Highway. Since 1995, band assured place in the world music scene. Next four albums were much more famous than the previous one. They were sold most frequently in countries of Germanic origin, Scandinavia and Latin America. Till Lindemann even sang a special song for the Americans. It was called Te quiero puta! and what is important it was written in Spanish. Rammstein published above seventy singles. Several of them were used in the well-known film productions. Who did not see Matrix or Resident Evil? There we can hear pieces like Du hast, Hallelujah and Mein Teil.
Rammstein always attaches weight to its telediscs. Often controversial, and spouted by journalists excite the public opinion. Well-made and inventive clips turn the listeners on. A lot of them were inspired by current events. The best example is Mein Teil; Two guys made a date by signing a contract, which concern a body of one of them. At the beginning, they ate a fried part of one of the people. Later, he was killed, chopped on slices and froze in a fridge. The second consumer survived this event, and ate the meat of his comrade about a month. Till Linemann was so fascinated with this fact, that he wrote a song about it. (Mein Teil took the second place on top lists in Germany and Finland). The teledisc shows Till when he ate angel wings and feathers; Flake performed ballet dance; Paul was shaking violently and wandering around the set in a crazed state. Richard wrestled with his alter-ego, Oliver writhed on the floor in a spasm. The whole band was fighting in a mud. And after that, five of the band members crawled out of a Berlin U-Bahn station while held on leashes carried by Christoph Schneider, dressed like a woman. Teledisc was restricted in Germany, where it could be played only after eleven o’clock on television. Show during the concert was also very interesting. Till is in a blood-stained chief’s clothes with machete using like a microphone. In the middle on the scene stayed cauldron with keyboarder inside. Lindemann tried to ‘roast’ this member, so he used flame-thrower and set Lorenz on fire. Burning keyboarder ran away through the scene from Till, who hunted on him with machete.
Rammstein amazes and amuses its fans from all over the world. From thirteen years we can listen wonderful rock songs. We can dance and sing with them or we can relax near fireplace at long winter evenings. Frankly speaking, I could not imagine today world without industrial bands like Rammstein… I do not know what I would listen to if there was not this kind of music. It would be better not to think about it… Fortunately, Till Lindemann will song continuously and we will still listen his clear and perfect resound.
