CHESS

Rules

Chess are a battle of two armies: a white army and a black army. The goal in game is to trap your opponent's king.
Each army consists of sixteen pieces: eight Pawns, two Knights, two Bishops, two Rooks, the Queen and the King.
White always begins the game. Then players move pieces alternately. Only one piece can be moved at a time. Player can’t skip movement.
Battle runs on the square chessboard with eight rows and eight columns. There are white and black squares on the board placed alternately.
Each type of piece has its own method of movement. A piece can be moved to another position or can capture an opponent's piece.
In the beginning of the game players place own pieces by the following method:
MOVES
All pieces except pawn take other pieces by the method of their normal movement.
Pawn
Pawns can move straight, one square at time. The exception is the first move of the pawn.
It can move two squares. Pawns can't take other pieces directly but only ones at a forward angle.
Knight

The knight is the only piece that can jump over other pieces. Knight moves one square forward or backward and two squares left or right or moves one square left or right and then two squares forward or backward.
Bishop
The bishop moves diagonally at any number of squares.
Rook
The rook moves only horizontally and vertically at any number of squares.
Queen
The queen can move like a rook and bishop in one. It can move vertically, horizontally and diagonally.
King
The king is the main piece in chess. It can move vertically, horizontally and diagonally but only at one square.

GOAL

Check
Attack on your opponent’s king ( threat of taking enemy king in the next turn) is called check.
In this situation owner of attacked king must move it to other, not attacked square or cover the king to make it not attacked ( it isn’t possible when the king is attacked by a knight ) or take the attacking piece if it’s possible.
Move that makes your own king under attack is not possible.
King can’t attack the opponent’s king.
Checkmate
When owner of attacked king can’t defend against check the game is over and owner of attacking piece is the winner. This situation is called checkmate.
Draw
When player can’t move any piece without breaking game rules the game is over with a draw result. It is called stalemate.
When both players haven’t got enough pieces on board to checkmate opponent the game is also over with a draw result.

SPECIAL MOVES
Castling
It is the only one way to move two pieces at one time. Castling is simultaneous move of the king and the rook. It is possible if there aren’t any other pieces between the king and the rook and pieces those are moving haven’t moved yet. The king moves two squares left or right and the closer rook moves to square behind the king.
En Passant
This move can occur only when the opponent’s pawn has just moved by two squares and your pawn is on the same horizontal line. You can move your pawn behind your opponent’s pawn and take it. You are able to do this only at the first turn after opponent’s pawn move.
