Attendance is required everywhere in school and the work place. However, I think there are certain areas that should not have a required attendance policy. Attendance is required by most instructors in order to teach discipline about future careers and in order for students to learn the material. I think that there should not be an attendance policy by any instructor teaching college level courses because as adults students should be able to choose whether or not they go to class without having to state a reason or receiving penalty from the teacher. Because the majority of people pay for their own tuition, if they do not pass a class from not knowing the material, it is only their own fault and waste of money. The biggest argument against not having an attendance policy is that having one keeps people disciplined and organized, as well as gets them prepared for their real world careers. In the faculty’s eyes, attendance is a very important item that people need to abide by for many reasons. Many teachers have participation points as part of the grading procedures, which are only accumulated based on classroom attendance. Furthermore, I think that there should not be an attendance policy on college courses because people actually pay to go college. Students give a lot of money for everything having to do with college, supplies, books, and tuition. I think that for something that expensive, students should be able to make good decisions about it on their own without having to follow any policies. If someone pays $900 in tuition, and they choose to only attend half of their classes, causing them to fail the other half of classes due to lack of attendance, only the payer is out of the money, whether the college tuition was paid by the student, parent, or financial aid. The college gets to keep their tuition money, unless it is a legitimate drop within the first week of school, but it takes a student longer to fail due to absentee problems, therefore it is not a legitimate reason for reimbursement. Finally, I think that there should not be an attendance policy because I think it teaches less discipline since the student is forced to attend as opposed to prioritizing to do it on their own. Students that are preparing to enter into the workforce and those that are beginning a career need to learn on their own that it is important to get themselves on schedule to attend class regularly, since they will have to attend work regularly in the near future.
