The musical “Chicago”, directed by Rob Marshall, is a film which I can not recommend to others. It won a lot of Oscars in 2003, including Best Costume and Best Supporting Actress. Also few Hollywood stars played in it: Renee Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Richard Gere.
The plot of the film focuses on the murder trials of two women. Velma Kelley (Zeta-Jones) is a famous chorus girl who is accused of murdering her husband and sister. Roxie Hart (Zellweger) wants to break into show business, but shoots her boyfriend. Both women are using their trial to advance their careers. They are also both being defended by expensive lawyer, Billy Flynn (Gere).
I must say I felt disappointed after seeing this film. The cast and many won Oscars encouraged me to watch it. It is said to be a comedy, although in my opinion nothing was funny in it. The musicals are not so amusing for me so I found the large part of the film boring. The only thing I enjoyed was the play of actors, especially Renee Zellweger. The fact of winning so many prizes by this film is surprising!
To sum up, “Chicago” is only a waste of time and we can skip it. There are lot of films which are not so well known but worth seeing.
