Middle Ages
The first Polish composition is the wedding song "Oj Chmielu, Chmielu". Wincenty from Kielcza was the first identified Polish author who had written in the 13th century, Gaude Mater Polonia (Latin:Be happy, Mother Poland).

Renaissance
Polish composers played an important role in European culture. The most significant Renaissance composers are: Mikołaj Gomółka, Wacław of Szamotuły.

Baroque
In the Baroque, instrumental music pieces were composed, among others, by Mikołaj Zieleński, Marcin Mielczewski and Bartłomiej Pękiel who is an author of the work considered to be the first Polish oratorio "Audite mortales".

The beginnings of opera
The opera appeared in Poland in 1628 . Warsaw was the fifth city in which this new musical genre was presented. At that time, in the second half of the 18th century, many composers wrote patriotic songs related to the Polish situation, including the opera, Krakowiacy i Górale, staged in 1794 in Warsaw, with music by Jan Stefani.

XIX century
The most famous Polish composer in the world is Fryderyk Chopin, author of a lot of miniatures and sonatas.
In that century,the romantic composer, pianist and politician Ignacy Jan Paderewski, who was the patron of my primary school, also gained world fame. Stanisław Moniuszko became the creator of the Polish national opera.

XX and XIX century
Mieczysław Karłowicz, described as "the father of Polish symphonic poem", gained wide recognition in the field of symphony. In the "Young Poland" genre, Karol Szymanowski, the most outstanding Polish composer after Chopin, was the creator of the opera "King Roger", which is extremely popular all over the world.
In the second half of the 20th century, the artists of the avant-garde, Krzysztof Penderecki, Henryk Mikołaj Górecki, and Wojciech Kilar, famous mainly for film music, gained international recognition.

Polish musicians achieved significant successes in the field of jazz music, creating an original style often referred to as Polish jazz. Especially in the 60s and 70s, Polish jazz music was very popular abroad. The group of internationally renowned artists includes Krzysztof Komeda, Adam Makowicz, Tomasz Stańko, and Michał Urbaniak. During the prl, the international Jazz Jamboree festival in Warsaw was really important.

Polish popular music is known for the world-famous metal scene. Bands that gained worldwide popularity, such as: Vader, Decapitated, Riverside, Vesania or Behemoth.
