England is West-European country which makes upUnited Kingdom and is part of GreatBritain. It has access to North Sea in East and Atlantic Ocean in West. It’s mostly flat country with mountains in north. United Kingdom is made up of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Great Britain is made up by Ireland and England. It’s raining a lot in England because of influence from Atlantic Ocean.
The capitol of England is London. In London live over 8 million people and over 60 in whole England. London is biggest city in England and of most visited city in the world.
Name „England” comes from name of Danish tribe called “Angels” who came to England in 5th century. England didn’t exist as united country that time. England became one country in 937. First English king was called Athelstan (Æthelstan) and he lost lot of English land in battle between England and Denmark. Danish people took over north and east. After many battles Athelstan regained English land and became king of whole England, officially. Many years later ruled Harold Godwish and lost battle against William Conqueror, a French attacker. During William Conqueror domination, England became French-speaking country for 300 years. One of the next kings (100 years later) was called Richard the Lionhearth. After his govern, England got anemblem – yellow lions on red background. England took over Wales in battle, in 13th century. There were many wars against Scotland and France. One of the most powerful kings in English history was Queen Elizabeth I. She made and led British Empire. In 1707 Scotland and England became one country called Great Britain. Last and living queen is Queen Elizabeth II.
British Empire was a global power between 15th and 17th century. They controlled over 23% of world’s surface. They had more than 460 million slabs all over the world. It was most powerful colonial empire in a history. They controlled countries like North America, India, Netherland, France and some parts of Asia. American colonies gained independence in 1776. Britain World War I and it was most influential period for them. No one country was so powerful like Great Britain. After World War II most of colonies gained independence.
English is West-Germanic language spoken in many countries. Around 380 million people are native speakers and its first spoken language by number of speakers. Around billion speak it as a second language. English has been influenced by many languages.
England is a Christian country with 71% Christians. There are many religions in country, but it’s a really small percent and only Christianity is a official religion. About 15% is not religious at all.
In 1533 king Henry VIII wanted divorce so England became protestant. In 1558, Queen Elizabeth I changed church back for Christianity.
English sport is known for football and cricket. Most known English football teams are: Arsenal, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United.
