The Tower of London

The tower of london is a complex of several buildings set within two rings of defensive walls and moat wich is located on the eastern boundary of the City of London finacial district.It is adjacent of the River Thames and Tower Bridge.
The oldest building of the Tower of London is the Norman White Tower which was built in 1708 by William the Conqueror. It is 90 feet high and the walls are 15 feet thick at the base .it was built mainly of Kentish rafstone,which is a very hard limestone of bluish-red colour. Hebry III,who reigned from 1216 to 1272,transformed the Tower into a royal residence.
The buildings constucted to the South of the White Tower from inmost Ward. The White Tower and the Inmost Ward are defended by a massive curtain wall with thirteen towers and the whole structure is called the Inner Ward. The second defensive wall with five towers was added by King Edward I (who reigned from 1272 to 1307 ) and the space between the walls is called Quater Ward. There are two moats around the walls; one is between the walls and the other is around oyter wall. The water entrance to the Tower is known as Traitors' Gate .The "Traitors" were famous prisoners such as Queen Anne Boylen and Sir Thomas More.
Nowadays, the Tower of London is mainly a tourist attraction. It has been the home of Crown jewels of the United Kingdom since 1303 and now visitors can see the regalia and vestments used by the sovereign during the coronation ceremony and on other official occasions. The Crownd Jewels consist of the crowns, sceptres, orbs, swords, rings, spurs, robes and other objects conncted with the ceremonies. The Tower also holds a fine armour collection from the Royal Armouries.
The tower is manned by the Yeomen Warders, known ad Beefeaters. Their role is to look after any prisoners at the Tower and guard the Crown Jewels, but they also act as tour guides. There are 36 Yeomen Warders including Chief Warder and thet live with their families inside the fortress .One of the Yeomen Warders is the Ravenmaster who looks after the ravens which is live at the Tower. Legend says that the ravens leave at the Tower, the monarchy will crumble. Every night the Ceremony of the Keys is performed when the Yeomen Warders secure the main gates of the Tower. The ceremony has been taking place since the 14th century.
