At the beginning of the film Dr. Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis) and his Wife Anna Crowe (Toni Collette) celebrate Malcolm’s Award for his performance in the filed child psychology. Then they notice there is someone in their house. It is Vincent Gray (Donnie Wahlberg) Malcolm’s former patient. He is trying to kill Malcolm because he couldn’t help Vincent. He shoots at Malcolm and then he directs the gun at himself and…
One year later the wound Malcolm’s are gone but his is still thinking about Vincent and because he doesn’t want to do another mistake he concentrates on Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment). Cole “is seeing ghosts”! He says he can see dead people that are walking around like normal people because they don’t know that they’re dead. Cole is scared of this people but the ghosts don’t want to scare him, they want him to do something for them. For example one little girl was killed by her mother but nobody knew it. Cole goes to the funeral of this little girl then he gets a box with a videocassette with the murder on it.

At the beginning Cole does not know that the ghosts just need help – he’s scared! Some times later as he tells Malcolm that he can see dead people – Malcolm suggests following the ghosts to find out what they want – Cole does it!
Cole also tries to tell her mother about his “illness” but she can’t believe it! First as he says her something about her mother that only the mother of Cole knows he begins to believe.

Cole also says to Malcolm that the dead people see what they want to see… - Malcolm is dead the whole film (“he is also a ghost”). He thinks his wife is ignoring him but in the reality she can’t even see him, also Cole’s mother can’t see him only Cole alone.
