Wolin Island is situated just across the German-Polish border and covers 265 sq. km, it borders on Baltic Sea from north and the Bay of Szczecin from south. It is generally a lowland, with forests and several lakes. Fishing and livestock raising are the chief industries. There are numerous bathing resorts. The principal town, Wolin, is a fishing port. A fortress and Slavic settlement once occupied the site of the town, whose history dates from the 9th cent. The island passed to Sweden in 1648, to Prussia in 1721, and to Poland after World War II. Most of the island is National Park, which was established on March 3,1960 on the Wolin Island. The forests of the Wolinski National Park invite for very pleasant walks. Most of the Park area is covered with mixed and deciduous forests. It is also a habitat of many animal species. The Wolin Island is a place worth seeing for it’s unique virtues .
