There are some social norms set within a society; norms that are created by tradition and customs existing within that society, which people need to, obey in order to be accepted by the rest of the community. These social standards influence public opinion so that there is sometimes no place for originality and uniqueness of an individual. Moreover, man and a woman are assigned to a certain role, a role appointed only for the one of the sexes. If a man or a woman decides to fulfill a task, which originally belongs to female or male duty, it often leads to discrimination and misperception of the person by others. The two articles, “Sporting that Strangely Piercing Look”, by Sharon Lindores, and “The World of the Stay- at- Home Dad”, as well as the cartoon called “The Far Side”, portray the issue of stereotyping and the struggle of people, who are the victims of the concern. However, these characters are heroes because they are trying to break the stereotypes the society forms. The young people, whose faces and other parts of the bodies are pierced, are more and more visible in the modern society, and they strive to be recognized not by their exterior look, but by the contest of their character. There are also others. Those are willing to choose a job, they would like to profess. However, some members of the society are often not giving them a chance to do so. It happens because the applicants do not meet their “norms” (for, example they are disabled). Fathers, who are taking care of their children, often become objects of sexist attitudes because the society and its “roles” cannot accept the fact, that they can be also as good as women in the role of stay-at-home parent. However, the articles also point out the fact that the society changes, and is more and more tolerant and open to new concepts. Unfortunately, it frequently takes a very long time, before one can live the way he/she wants without being discriminated against.
