Princess Beatrice of York (Beatrice Elizabeth Mary; born 8 August 1988) is a member of the British Royal Family. She is the elder daughter of Prince Andrew, Duke of York and Sarah, Duchess of York and the granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Princess Beatrice is fifth and the first female in the Line of succession to the British Throne. She was the first Princess to be born into the immediate Royal family since the birth of Princess Anne in 1950. She is the Queen's fifth grandchild and second granddaughter.

Birth

Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice of York was born at the Portland Hospital in London on 8 August 1988 weighing 6lb 12oz (3.06 kg). Her father is The Prince Andrew, Duke of York, the second son of Queen Elizabeth II and The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Her mother is Sarah, Duchess of York (ne Ferguson), daughter of Ronald Ferguson and his wife Susan Wright, later Susan Barrantes. Beatrice was named after Princess Beatrice, the youngest daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. She has one sibling, a younger sister, Princess Eugenie, born in 1990.
She was baptised on 20 December 1988 in the Chapel Royal, St. James's Palace. Her godparents were Viscount Linley, Peter Palumbo, Lady Jane Dawnay formerly the Duchess of Roxburghe, the late Carolyn Cotterell and Gabrielle Greenall.
As a granddaughter of the British monarch in the male line, Beatrice is a Princess of the United Kingdom, with the style of HRH, and is therefore styled Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice of York. Beatrice and her sister Eugenie are the only granddaughters of the Queen to hold the title of Princess and the style of Her Royal Highness; although their cousin Lady Louise Windsor is, by Letters Patent of King George V, legally a princess, she is not styled as such at the request of her parents. Their cousin, Zara Phillips, is a granddaughter of the Queen through the female line, as daughter of Princess Anne, the Princess Royal, and therefore is not titled or styled in any fashion (her father has no noble titles to pass on either).

Education

Princess Beatrice began her early education at Upton House School, Windsor, Berkshire in 1991. From there she and her sister attended Coworth Park School in Surrey from 1995. Her secondary education began at St. George's School in Ascot, Berkshire an all-girls school, in 2000, where she finished in 2007. For a time it was suggested by Beatrice's father that his daughters would be educated abroad at Aiglon College in Switzerland. Those plans were shelved once the school became embroiled in public controversy.[citation needed] In 2005 it was revealed that Princess Beatrice had been diagnosed with dyslexia when she was younger. Consequently she delayed sitting for her GCSE exams by a year.
Princess Beatrice was elected to be head girl at St George's in her final year beginning in 2006. A school spokesman is quoted on The Royalist website as saying: 'This year the school has elected Princess Beatrice of York to be head girl and we are delighted that she has accepted the position.'
In August 2007, she obtained grade A in A'level drama, and two Bs in History and Film Studies.
In September 2008, she started a degree in history of ideas at Goldsmiths College, London.

Home life

Her parents divorced when Princess Beatrice was 8 years old. When not at school her time is spent with her family. Princess Beatrice said in 2005 in an interview to mark her 17th birthday that her parents' divorce in 1996 had in fact brought them all closer. She attends many royal family events, as expected as she is a senior member of the British Royal Family but also relishes her "normal" life. Beatrice and her sister regularly travel abroad with one or both of their parents.

Future

Princess Beatrice has grown up free of any real press intrusion into her life, despite the coverage constantly given to her parents. Since she has appeared in public on her own the media have speculated on boys she is apparently dating. One relationship caused a real stir when Princess Beatrice stopped seeing Paolo Liuzzo after it was revealed he was involved in the death of an American college student.[4] and the Mail on Sunday ran a story telling how she had struck a fellow student in the face when at Coworth Park School.
In an interview to mark her 18th birthday in 2006, Beatrice stated that she wanted to use her position to assist others by carrying out some charity work.[citation needed] She has already undertaken charity work alongside her mother through the various charities the Duchess supports. In 2002 she made headlines visiting HIV-infected children in Russia. In Britain she has shown support for Springboard for Children and the Teenage Cancer Trust.[citation needed]
There have also been rumours that Beatrice and a friend have plans to start their own designer fashion-line.
According to an article in the Daily Mail, she is also set to be the first member of the Royal family to ever appear in a film[7] when she has a cameo in The Young Victoria, based around the accession and coronation of Princess Beatrice's great-great-great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria. Beatrice is to have a minor non-speaking role in a number of scenes.
She is fifth in the line of succession. If Princess Beatrice becomes the fourth adult in line to the throne (for example, if Charles, Prince of Wales ascended the throne) Beatrice would become eligible to become a Counsellor of State, a role currently performed by her father. She is also fifth in the orders of precedence for ladies.
During the summer of 2008, she undertook volunteer work as a sales clerk in Selfridges, London.

Public appearances

Beatrice and her sister Princess Eugenie were royal guests at the Concert for Diana organised by their cousins Prince William and Prince Harry of Wales in memory of their late aunt. Princess Beatrice also attended the Service of Thanksgiving for Diana with her sister Princess Eugenie of York on 1 September 2007. The two princesses represented their father, Prince Andrew, The Duke of York, who was on an official visit to Malaysia.

Arms

Her Majesty The Queen granted Arms to Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice of York by a Warrant dated 18 July 2006:

The Arms are blazoned:

Within a Lozenge ensigned by a Coronet composed of four Crosses formy and four Strawberry Leaves the Royal Arms differenced by a Label of five points Argent the centre and the exterior points each charged with a Bee volant proper. The Supporters are to be the Royal Supporters charged with the like Coronet and Label.
The use of three bees in her Arms continues the trend in royal heraldry (cf. the Arms of Prince William of Wales) of using charges from the maternal line. (The Ferguson Arms feature a crest bearing a bee.) It can also be considered a pun on the name Beatrice, an unusual example of canting in modern royal arms.
