In today?s world; a planet ruled by technology and media, some tend to forget of the times where religion was the ruling factor in people?s daily lives. Throughout time there have been several religions that have appeared such as Atheism, Judaism, Gothicism, Mormons and the more popular custom beliefs of Muslims and Christians. While all of these religions have had great impacts through history, it is apparent that Islam and Christianity are the strongest beliefs that have stood the test of time, Christianity being the most observed.
Christianity was founded by Jesus of Nazareth about 4 BCE. Jesus was said to have been born in Bethlehem, during Herod?s reign. So they started the Christian calendar soon after starting with year 1. Jesus and his 12 disciples traveled from place to place teaching and healing. When the Sanhedrin heard of Jesus? preaching of him, being, ?The Son of God,? there savior he damned Jesus to death. Jesus was crucified soon after on a cross where he died, but was believed to be resurrected on days later. While according to the bible there are only a few who witnessed this, it is a test of Christian?s faith to believe it to be true. ?You can do very little with just faith, but you can do next to nothing without it? ?Anonymous
Christianity is discovered practically universally in the world today. It accounts for almost one-third of the world?s population. Christianity began in the area around ancient Palestine and spread from there. By 300 CE the religion had spread throughout the Mediterranean Sea, reaching to all coasts. The denser populated areas being Carthage, Ephesus, and Constantinople. Some think it had spread so well because it was so easy to embrace. There were not any myths, just a real person with great ethics. Christianity broke into several different religions and denominations. The irony od modern day denominations is it could tear people of the same belief apart just because of minor interpretations of Christianity; the very thing that is supposed to bring brethren closer. It started all with Christianity and in 1066 AD it split, eparating into the Roman Catholic and the
Eastern Orthodox churches.
After that the Eastern Orthodox branched into Protestantism
and that had 3 distinct branches: evangelical, reformed churches, and episcopacy. The Roman Catholic also had a time of reform and it branched out as well. Today there are dozens of religions that had branched off of Christianity. The basic beliefs of the Christians have been practiced for centuries. Perhaps the greatest belief, The Bible, and the 27 books that makes up the New Testament. They believe in divine creation and an increased emphasis on God the father. God is the foundation of the Christian religion. Also the beliefs that all men are created equal as well as belief that the scriptures are words of God. They believe in first God, then Jesus, and then the Holy Spirit. This is called Arianism or the Trinity; the belief that God had created heaven, earth and Christ; his son in the power of the Holy Spirit. In addition, the foundation for the Christian belief is that Jesus had died so all humans could go to heaven and have eternal life. Baptist was a domination of Christianity, but to be baptized was any Christian?s way of accepting Jesus/God and the one and only true God. There are a lot of beliefs with denominations that view them all differently.
Christianity was built with the Pope chosen to lead. It began with Jesus and the 12 apostles. The first Christians were Jews, and then they were converted to the faith. Peter founded churches and was the head of the church in Rome. The bishop of Rome is the Pope. The Holy Father chooses cardinals, and these are his assistants. They make up the College of Cardinals. The cardinals elect the new Pope when the seat is empty. In 1869, Pope Pius IX assembled the Vatican council; currently the home of the Pope and
council today. The bishop, being the most important leader in a large church, is the supervisor. The deacons are the most important in the local churches. Priests give the ceremonies and conveyed the message of Jesus to the public.
If one were to ask the American public about their views of Christians, what response would one receive? We can imagine that there would be a great variety of answers. However, most people might say that, in general, Christians are not very different from everybody else. This is a problem. There are many people who claim to be Christians whose lifestyles do not reflect their beliefs. The problem with this situation is that it gives non-Christians the wrong impression of Christianity.
Christians need to live their lives in a way that reflects what they claim to believe. Christianity is a lifestyle not just a set of beliefs. A Christian is not merely someone who attends church once in a while and believes that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. We know that there is more involved because the Bible says in James 2:19, "You believe in God. Good! Even the demons believe that---and shudder." The literal definition of the word Christian is a follower of Christ. When a person makes a decision to follow any sort of leader, he tries to pattern his thoughts and align his thinking with the mentality of his leader.
This brings me to my last point about Christianity. While all religions, some may say in today?s time, is based off of faith, this does not change the fact that as Christians or people in general wanting the fact, it is our obligation to seek out and reveal the truth. Here are some examples of modern misconceptions:
Christians can divorce or remarry considering that the other spouse committed adultery. If one is to follow the bible on faith and use it as a guideline to everlasting life, then we must acknowledge that in Matthew 19: 4-6, it clearly states, ?And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.?
Another misconception is that Saturday is still the Sabbath. In these several scriptures, one may say it disproves this theory:
Acts 20:7 ? ?And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them?
1 Cor 16:2 ? ?Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.?
Col 2:16-17 ? ?Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the Sabbath: Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.?
I am not stating that these ideas are necessarily of my own. What these ideas do say about Christianity is that while is Christianity or religion in general is to be basis and foundation of our daily lives, it is all through faith. Faith is what allows people to believe in something that they may not necessarily know for certain are there or true. This is why people always have doubts. If we knew it for certain, would we need faith? While faith may be seen as the beauty and flaw in all religions, nevertheless, whether is be Atheism, Islam, Judaism, or Christianity, we all need something to believe in at the end of the day
