Superstitions

Writing about history of all superstitions would be rather hard, so I' ll write only about a few. Most of them have their roots in the ancient times, like for example not greeting your guest at the door. In ancient Rome people didn't do it ( especially at dark nights), because they never knew if the person that had just come wanted to kill the master of the house. Before greeting each other two people had to stand face to face and shake hands.
And how do you think: Why's spilt salt known for bringing guarrels? You can be suprised by the answer! The beginning of this supersitition dates back to Middle Ages. At that time salt was very expensive. Only the richest could let themselves buy this rare spice. You can imagine a great guarrel, when a servant spilt it.... Sometimes he was even sentenced to death for something like that! This is why people remembered spilt salt as a bad luck bringer.
And why should we not walk under a ladder? I find the answer to this guestion pretty funny. We ought not to do it, because someone very heary can be on it and at the moment we are passing under it he can fall down. Imagine a faw man falling on you from the sky that would be terrible. There is also a superstition that says that we shouldn't walk under a pole but I don't know what could possibly fall from up there.
The last superstition I' ll talk about isn't very well- known. It says that before you go on a trip you should sit for about 5 minutes so that you would have somewhere to come back to. It's a Russian superstition from the times of Ivan the Ferocious. When you were going to Moscow you never knew if you came back alive. That's why everyone sat for a few minutes before living their home, once more looking at it as if he could never come back.
So we can learn from superstitions a lot about ourselves, because there is always a story behind any of them.
