The problem of common language exists in the European Union since it was set up. The opponents think that it is not a good idea and fight against politicians who want to implement English as a common tongue to communicate in all European countries. More and more people believe it would facilitate life and they tend to accept this contoversial issue.
First of all, English is used in almost every country on the Earth. Not only do politicians use it in official conversations but all of us can hear it oi the street. Imagine the situation you are a tourist and visit, let’s say, Bulgaria. You want to do shopping, you go to the department store and cannot understand what a saleswoman says. Nowadays it is almost impossible but there are places where you can be missunderstood. English could be useful in the hospitals, post offices and police stations. You never know what can happen when you are abroad.
In addition, English could make Europeans one big family. In the Middle Ages Latin connected people and was the only language of literature and art. Nowadays, we all can comunicate by the Internet. We want to meet new friends and English is”a new Latin in private”.
What is more, English as an official language of the European Union would improve education of Polish politicians. It may sound strange but the most important people in our country cannot communite in foreign languages. Neither the president nor the prime minister knows English. Never before have I also heard about a minister of foreign affairs who speaks only in her native language. It is sure the compulsory English tongue would change it a lot.
Generally speaking, one common language would make our life much easier. Of course, there some are drawbacks involved, for instance many people are afraid of disappearance of native culture, but in my opinion English is going to be our common language in the next years.
