“The more words on produces, the better one becomes at using them, and the more one learns”.

Arguments in favour of writing more assignments (more words).

- Writing more allows students to polish their language and demonstrate their writing skills.
- 30 years ago students wrote more assignments - better prepared for University.
- Writing more prepares students more adequately for the University way of learning.
- The best way to judge a students performance is by assessing their writing.
- Writing more allows students to get a greater amount of feedback from teachers.

Arguments in favour of writing fewer assignments (less words).

-Most schools only ask their students to write a few essays during their High School education.
-More dose not necessarily mean better writing.
-Writing more can lead to an overload of work for students.
- Because University students write only a few essays, at high school there is no need to write large amounts.
-If students are bored or not interested in the topic, they will not write a large amount of essays.

Author’s point of view:

The author is putting forward an argument in favour of high school students writing longer essays. For this reason lecture at University expect students to express themselves in clearly and in an understandable way. The writer is trying to compare the education system that was established 30 years with the current one. By comparing, it can be seen that students in the past where expected to do more work which would prepare them for University education. Therefore, writing a larger amount of words and preparing for having more tests and exams could avoid the shock of work overloading at University. The author indicates that only by hard work, students can achieve good results in essay writing. The main point is that students show teachers, what their writing level is, and by getting feedback from them, they could know in which section they went wrong. However teachers give students topics that may not interest them, are not useful, or make them bored - students will not concentrating on writing. In conclusion, the writer says that “The teacher is the best judge of what a student should be learning and (…)”, In other words, teachers alone do not guaranty successful students and feedback from them should show significant way for students to improve writing and oral skills.

My point of view:

Teachers often want to compare and contrast essays or other assignments to make some final evaluation or judgment about student’ levels of writing and discuss which skill they have mastered and which skill they need to improve. It is necessary to take into consideration the requirement of constructing and preparing young people for their future education. Most of the author’s views seem to express my thoughts about that topic. Students should write as many essays as they can, and by stating that they are overloaded with work, this could represent their antipathy to study or lack of interest in improving their writing. Conversely the circumstances of essays writing have changed from what was established 30 years ago. The author indicates that it is the only way, however oral presentations and lesson participation could also demonstrate students’ level. Teachers judge students on their writing skills and knowledge. Students should be able to use the feedback from teachers to develop their skills, it is easier for them to judge because they know what level student represents and know all the ‘tips’ to improve it. Nonetheless students’ performance can change, depending on their mode or environment. University requires a high level of essay writing. It tests a person’s qualities and performance expresses their thoughts and present information in the best understandable way. Therefore practising writing more gives students the opportunity to master their skills in this area.
