Recently I finished the school year and decided to buy some new books for my holiday trip. In order to do so, I paid a visit to Empik Junior which is one of my favorite book stores with quite a large selection of the best, as for me, genre – fantasy. Walking between shelves full of nicely edited works, I couldn’t manage to pick up those which would accompany me during holiday nights. But then one of Empik’s staff headed towards me and helped me by suggesting some of his favorites. One of them was Terry Gookind’s ‘Wizard’s First Rule’.
Having read the blurb on the back of the book and seen the cover illustration I thought, ‘Great, another story about a mysterious girl, a hero and lots of nasty and dangerous killers’. However, after several dozen of pages my feelings were changed by the plot which, at first glance, appeared to me rather dull and plain. New information was brought on every single page, I just longed for diving deeper into this amazing and complicated world where nothing seems to be ordinary and obvious. Even description of the nature, which is usually the most boring part of books, is really fantastic.
But the biggest advantages of Goodkind’s book are the unexpected turns in action. Whenever you think that everything is clear and the story will finish in few pages, you suddenly learn that you were wrong and have to plunge into, with extreme pleasure, next pages of this genius piece of art.
I can strongly recommend this ‘Wizard’s first rule’ and assure you, that no matter how many times you read the book, you will certainly like to reach for it another time. It’s now one of my favorite books, which places Terry Goodkind beside such classics of genre as George R. R. Martin, Glen Cook or Steven Erikson. Oh, there is one thing I’ve forgotten to tell you, it’s just the first novel of ‘Sword of Truth’ series.
