When people reach the age of 18 they become adults in the eyes of law.
They can vote, obtain passports by themselves, get a driving-licence, join the army, get married, sign contracts, buy land and buildings. They do not need their parents’ permission if they want to have a full-time job and earn a living. When you are 18 you take on more duties and responsibilities and if you happen to break the law you are punished. Teenagers feel they have a right to be independent. Sixteen and seventeen-year-olds are allowed to enjoy more and more freedom. They can have a part-time job, but they mustn’t work in school hours, so 13-year-olds can deliver newspapers to people’s homes and teenage girls can babysit. In general 16 or 17-year-olds get a driving-licence and can drive or ride a motorbike. Teenagers want to be more and more independent. They desire to spend time with the company they like, come back home later and later, wear clothes they like, listen to crazy music, choose their own way. Some teenagers seem to be under the strong influence of their peers. In some cases poor relationships with their parents cause more troubles and disagreements. We call such poor relationships ,,a generation gap”. Not all adults know what growing up really means.
