Charity begins at Christmas

Charity. How do we actually understand this word? Longman’s dictionary gives us a few meanings, but I will qoute just 2 of them:
1. Money or gifts given to help the poor sick etc.
2. A kind, sympathetic attitude you have, when judging or criticizing someone.

During Christmas time many actions to help the poor are made. Wielka Orkiestra Swiatecznej Pomocy is quite a controversial one, but still the most popular. But why are we more prone to give our money to people that suffer poverty? Some people find the atmosphere of Christmas making them unable to pass near a begger without giving him some money. Others want to feel useful by helping other people. But this climate lasts for three or four weeks. Why do we lose our enthusiasm after this short period only to regain it not before a year pasts.

We cannot forget about the poor and sick after getting up from a Christmas table. Christmas should be just a good start for us. There are many foundations and organizations which are raising money for the poor throughout the whole year. So why shoun't we help them? Even the smallest gifts will make poor children happy. Each of us has some spare clothes and toys in a closet. I have recently cleaned all of my closets before the upcoming renovation, an I found a whole pile of things which I know I will never use, but the needing people will find very useful. I gave all my old toys and winter shoes to Caritas. The people there were extremely grateful for the gifts, an I can be sure that they will make a good use of it.

These is just one example of how we can help other people. All of us can find their way of how to make others happy. We must remember that even the smallest amount of money, or a gift can change someone's life for better.
