Christmas Carol - Analiza

The film „Christmas Carol” was produced in 2009. The film tells us about Christmas time in London. It is American film several known actors. Director’s name is Robert Zemeckis and main stars are Jim Carrey (Scrooge, ghosts), Gary Oldman (Marley) and Colin Firth (Fred). Film’s main genre is fantasy and it is a fairy-tale. Story takes place in London, in past. It may be about eighteen or nineteen century. There is a lot of snow and playing children in the streets. Most of people are pretty poor.
It is Christmas time, a day before a Christmas Eve. Opening scene show us a funeral house, where main character works. He pays another man, but doesn’t really want to. He shows us that he is an old greedy man. The most important sequences are moments at the job and the way he treat his business partner, scenes where ghosts visit Scrooge and the moment of change. He is much different person on the end of the film.
The film starts at funeral house where Scrooge is quite unkind for his business partner. It’s 23. December and everyone want to celebrate the Christmas, but not Scrooge. For him is the ordinary day and he is annoyed by happy people around. After work he goes home and meets a ghost by the door. The same evening ghost visits him and tells to prepare for coming of next ghosts. Actually, this ghost is his business partner called Jacob Marley, who died for 7 years ago. Ebenezer Scrooge is unavailable scared. In the end of visit Jacob shows him other ghost who can’t find a peace. He has to travel in the world too, because in his life, he was busy as Scrooge is. He didn’t move outside the funeral house. Jacob regrets much, but it is too late to change his situation and he has to follow the path he deserved. When Jacob leaves, first ghost arrives. This ghost is ghost of the past Christmas. He shows him the past, these bad things he have done. Scrooge is touched but doesn’t change his way of thinking too much. He sees himself as a little boy, who needed attention, but never got it. Second ghost is ghost of present Christmas. He shows how people celebrate Christmas in their houses. He notices that his partner (Cratchit) child is sick and possibly can die. Ebenezer sees people who rise their glasses and says “For Scrooge”. In that moment he is deeply touched. He regrets thing he have done in the past and wants to change it. Last ghost is ghost of the future, the death. Scrooge sees dead child of Cratchit – Tiny Tim. He cries and wants to spare this child, but it seems to be too late. In the end he sees his own gravestone – “Ebenezer Scrooge, died 25. December”. After he arrives home, he is another person. He is much different, that he used to be. He spends time with his nephew and buys a turkey to a poor kid in the street.
There are no parallel plots in this history. One symbol was money putted on eyes to a dead man. It comes from the Greek mythology. Dominating colours is grey and dark blue, quite dark shades. In the end of the film, when Scrooge is happy, gold, red, green and white dominate on the screen. These are more positive colours which tell us that bad times are in the past.
We find a several themes in the Christmas Carol. One of them can be a change. It is a personal change of an old greedy man to a happy, peaceful and hopeful Ebenezer Scrooge, a man who helps poor people in the all ways he can. It tells us also about the Christmas – how is it, how we spent our time with family and it teach us to be a good person no matter what, because there are always someone who can be in much worse situation than we are and we got to help him/her.
In the beginning – the bad times – music is very deep and heavy. In the middle - in the time of regretting music is much softer and quite sad. In the end we can hear happy Christmas songs. There are some close-up shots, especially in the beginning. We can see main character’s face, how greedy and unkind he is. There are many full shots too. We can see whole city or the landscape under characters. It is a little light in the beginning, characters usually use only a candle, but in the end there are lights everywhere, in the streets and houses. Ghosts contain much of light too. It is easy to notice them.
Christmas Carol is one of the finest films about the Christmas. Everyone can see it, no matter how old they are. It is a perfect film for whole family, since kids love fairy tales. I think it is really good movie, because it is full of hope and love. It is about Christmas – the time of reuniting and forgiveness. It teaches us that people should help and love each other. Christmas Carol tells that everyone deserve to get another chance, that everyone can change. It tells that we can live together in harmony and peace. It would like to recommend this film to everyone. It is the perfect Christmas movie.
