Being an Only Child
Being an only child has profound effects on us and shapes who we are. A lot of studies have been done. They all say that us the ?onlies? are no different than others. I think that only children are no different than other people with brothers and/or sisters.
The Only Child Myth has been going on for a long time. It says that only children are bossy, aggressive, maladjusted, spoiled, selfish, and bratty and apparently this is only the begging of this long list it is ongoing and said to never end. Many only children are feeling like there stereotyped into one big group. A lot of only children are not any of the ways people describe only children for example ?I?m an only child. I don?t think I am bossy,? Corinne said,? (abc news ?The Only Child Myth?). There is many cases that say that only children don?t act like they are described to do so.
Like many people may ask does being a only child have a effect on your studies?. A couuple of studies have been done saing that a ? a lamdmark 20-year study shown increading one-to-one parenting produces higher education levels, higher test scores and higher levels of achivement.? (abc news ?The Only Child Myth?). This states that if a child has more attention from parent they will achieve higher and higher to satisfy the parent.
A point that has been pointed out by researchers states that only children don?t have as much friends as other children and may not belong to as much organizations, and clubs. Only children do join some clubs and are usually the leaders. They many only have a couple of close friends and say that they are there sisters .
Advantages of being an only child are you get more attention from your parents which may result in you being too self-confident. Another advantage may be freedom form sibling rivalry and comparison, and access to more family resources. You also may have the advantages of more pocket money meaning you will have more money to spent for yourself; also it may be easier to convince your parents to buy you an item you want and to let you go somewhere. But what I think are the two biggest advantages are not having to share a room and that you don?t have to wear passed down clothes.
Disadvantages of being an only child could be loneliness during child hood. You don?t really have someone to play with 24 hours a day 7 times a week. So your child hood I limited and you don?t really enjoy it to the fullest. In the story ?Through The Tunnel? by: Doris Lessing: a boy that is a only child is limited to do what he wants because his mother is over protective is a disadvantage of being an only child.
Another disadvantage may be you may be limited to go places and do other things. Your parents also don?t have anyone to compare you with so they will compare you to the best person there is but if you had a brother or sister that set a low priority then you could also slack off.
Most only children want to have brothers and sisters. But others that have brothers and sisters want to be an only child. Studies have proven lots of things but I think this is one thing that will never be proven.
