Science-fiction novel:

A novel that takes place in the future and usually involves speculations based on current science.
A popular novel form which involves some utopian elements. The object is to reflect back on how we are now, as well as to dream on the possible future where life has more potential. Another object is to create an environment for moral discussion.

Common subjects for science fiction include the future, near and far, especially future societies better or worse than our own; travel through space or time; life on other planets; crises created by technology, or by alien creatures and environments; and the creation or destruction of worlds. Stories are generally characterized by radical changes from the present; large distances in space or long spans of time; and extreme, sometimes lurid imagery.

Science fiction often involves one or more of the following elements:
· A setting in the future or on an alternative time line.
· A setting in outer space or involving aliens or unknown civilizations.
· The discovery or application of new scientific principles, such as time travel or psionics, or new technology, such as nanotechnology, faster-than-light travel or robots.
· Political or social systems different from those of the known present or past.
