O Bydgoszczy

The town of Bydgoszcz is situated At the junction of the Brda and Vistula rivers in the mid-west of Poland. Bydgoszcz is the chief town of the district, and the largest town of the Kujawy, Pałuki, Krajna and Chełmno – Dobrzyń regions.
In the course of history, Bydgoszcz was often a border – town. This is why it was repeatedly destroyed as a result of military operations. Also, it suffered great fires and floods. All these factores have combined to produce only a few monuments remaining from the old splendor. The most precious monument in Bydgoszcz is St. Mikołaj and Marcin parish church from the 15th century. This church also serves as a marian shrine, related to a Gothic picture of “Madonna with a Rose – God’s Mother of Beautiful Love” in the high alter; the picture is one of the most beautiful images of the Virgin Mary in Poland.
Bydgoszcz is surrounded by a land of forests and lakes. Just within a distance of 25-30 km are attractive recreation areas, bathing beaches, and fishing and hunting grounds. And the most beautiful place is Polish Fauna and Flora Garden at Myślęcinek. Also in the centre of the city there is a bydgosian Venice (Wenecja Bydgoska), in which some buildings are from the 19th/20th century.
For many sports fans the town name is associated with (kojarzone z) well-known sports clubs. Zawisza is a first division football and weight lifting team, and the Polonia club, which was a leading speedway team. Also sport hall called “Łuczniczka” (now also with a bowling centre), build in 2002, is becoming one of important places in sport live. Although it is made for sports events, many concerts, shows and other cultural event are happened there.
Another interesting face of the town is being created by artistic circles. Bydgoszcz is a well-known musical centre. The Musical Academy, music schools, and the Philharmonic Hall – world-famous for its acoustics and first-class orchestry – are located in the “musical quarter” of the town.
An interesting program is presented by the theatres: the “Teatr Polski” Dramatic Theatre and “Opera Nova”. A new opera house of interesting architectural design.
In Bydgoszcz there are some others interesting places, especially for young people. One of them is great movie complex called “Multikino”, in which films are being played whole day on ten screens.
